If these things interest you, it’s worth it. If you prefer perfect resort days and staying on the beaten path, this is probably not for you.
We bought a fair amount in the gift shop to bring home for friends and family. (We also went to the macadamia nut farm and a coffee plantation for gifts)
Local vanilla farm with some interesting products. We tried one of their fragrant teas in the back garden. Very peaceful setting, with light bird chatter and crickets in the background. I could stay there for hours. Bought a vanilla bean to infuse some vodka and a packet of southwestern spice rub to try on fish and steak.
Out of all the tours I did on the island, this one was my favourite. I had also gone on a honey, coffee and manta ray snorkling tour but this was by far the most interesting.
Great experience. Family run vanilla farm with tour and delicious lunch. Jimmy is a very genuine guy who has busted his tail (along with his family) to be an expert in growing vanilla and to be a great host and guide. He answers questions about growing vanilla and also about his experiences and how he got started. It is a very nice operation done in a rustic environment. Again, very delicious lunch. If you are going to go all that way, get lunch (have to sign up in advance).
Great foodie tour (you have no idea how much you don't know about vanilla!) which does require a reservation, as does lunch. The shop is nice, vanilla products are reasonably priced (but not cheap.) This is the 1st vanilla farm in the USA. Main supplier of high quality vanilla bean is French Polynesia.
Super nice people, Ian was our host and answered any of our questions. Food was wonderful. The tour was very informative. This best part of this was learning how little I knew of vanilla. The lunch, beverages and desert was perfect. I would definitely do this again. Thank you Ian and family.
Jim is well educated in the knowledge of vanilla and fairly funny at times. The luncheon was my favourite part as I wanted to taste how vanilla could be incorporated into savory dishes and they proved it was possible. It also sounded like a better deal overall.
The gift shop has a good variety of vanilla incorporated items, I regret having not stocked up but travelling from a different country usually prevents you from splurging. I would highly recommend going for the tour + luncheon option over just the tour, better value and you also get fed.
The farm isn’t likely to be close to where you are staying so put on Hawaiian music radio station 100.3 and get into the Aloha spirit.
